Sow March-April, harvest November, December, January, February, March, April. Direct sow outdoors at a depth of 1cm, from March to April in a good seedbed ready for transplanting later on. Or sow indoors January to February at a depth of 1cm in modules using good quality compost. Place in a propagator or sealed container inside a plastic bag. Germination takes up to 21 days. Once germinated grow on in cooler conditions until frost risk has passed. When leeks are 20cm tall acclimatise them to the outdoors over a 10 day period. Transplant them into rich well drained soil. Plant at a distance of 23cm between plants and 30cm between rows. Using a dibber make a 6inch deep hole. Drop leek plant in and fill with water, washing soil around plant. This will make sure stems are bleached. Cover with netting. Water after planting.
